The Breast Cancer 3-Day
Kansas City, September 15-17, 2006
benefitting the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and NPT Breast Cancer Fund

I was inspired beyond my own words, privileged to be a part of this incredible fund-raising effort, being ONE person who can make a difference in the future efforts of Breast Cancer research.

For those who know me, my spirituality thrives within my daily existence.  Life ‘is what it is’, let’s make the best of it each and every day.  At 52 years ‘young’, I am blessed to be a healthy person, so very full of LIFE!  This is one aspect I have learned to never take for granted.  As I embarked on this new journey, my mission was similar to those who had walked before me, who would walk with me, and to the future.  My differences, however, were personal.  Just over 10 years ago, my GREAT AUNT JUDY was diagnosed with breast cancer, during a time when her life was full of her own trials & tribulations, as well as her husbands’ health.  Her aggressive treatment for survival included a mastectomy, and her ongoing will and spirit to live.  We had just celebrated her 86th birthday in March; she is the heart and soul of my inspiration.

And, just over a year before the walk, I was shocked to know that one of my friends and youngest son’s moms was diagnosed with a very rare form of breast cancer, stage 4.  What seemed at that time to be a sure death sentence, I continue to be inspired by her now recovery, as her cancer has been diagnosed in remission.  She is SUE, a remarkable woman, full of the spirit and will to LIVE – I was honored to be her teammate – she mine … as TEAM IRIS was formed to make a difference with this horrible monster – cancer.

In 2005, I wanted to walk – to honor Aunt Judy, Sue … others I knew … as well as those I would some day meet.  Although postponed just one year, I was centered, focused and had prepared my very gutsy & tenacious self to embark upon this incredible journey.   Important to all members of our newly formed team – was our team name.  It had to provide meaning … IRIS … it is a flower that got its name from the Greek goddess IRIS, goddess of the rainbow.  IRIS was also known to be the messenger of Zeus and Hera.  IRIS would take messages from ‘the eye of Heaven’ to earth traveling on the arc of the rainbow.  The world ‘IRIS’ means ‘eye of heaven’.  TEAM IRIS … nine women … each of us carries a piece of heaven with us.

I am emotional and passionate about this cause; your support of me and my team was so important.    The support motivated myself and TEAM IRIS as we (together) took an amazing journey in the fight against breast cancer!  The Breast Cancer 3-Day is a 60-mile walk over the course of three days.  Net proceeds benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the National Philanthropic Trust, funding important breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment.

We did it - an awesome journey!
